As a prelude to the show on PFW’s penultimate day, a recording played of Lana Del Rey reciting a wistful 2019 poem about lost love: “In Zimmermann with sandals on one / Summer dress to choose….” Moments later, she sat in the front row – now considered a friend of the house – taking in a parade of summer dresses awash in soft watercolour florals and shaped with airy organza volumes. Would she be drawn to a strapless A-line silhouette in lace, trimmed with braiding along the décolleté, or perhaps to one of the buoyant, step-responsive designs? Maybe she’d favour one of the sleek, sportier looks in solid hues with a neo-empire waist or the teal draped gown that dipped seductively low at the back.
Dubbed “Kindred Spirit,” this carefree collection is inspired by a boldly expressive community of artists in 1970s Sydney. Signature floral prints get warped into psychedelic proportions, while colours lean into the nostalgic palette of the era. Birds – embroidered, hand-stitched and cut out – are a recurring motif, featured on both standout dresses and denim. Get ready to take flight to Australia with Nicky Zimmermann.
